Former player of the Ukrainian national team: "The match for third place in the current format of the World Cup is not needed"
Former footballer of the Ukrainian national team Volodymyr Homeniuk believes that with the current number of participants in the World Cup and the corresponding duration of the tournament, the match for the third place should not be held.
“One can argue for a long time whether matches for the ‘bronze’ are needed in such a marathon distance as the World Cup in its current format. I tend to think not: both teams should be awarded medals for the exhausting tournament journey.
On the other hand, then we would not have witnessed a real spectacle with a goal feast, a series of missed opportunities (referring to the match for the third place at the 2026 World Cup, France - England - 4:6, - ed. note). And the fact that the match was valid for coaches and players, for some reason, does not bother anyone - supposedly, it's their job,” Homeniuk said.
